Empire Slowly Revealing Our First Look at the New CGI Tintin« FirstShowing.net

Empire Tintin Reveal

We're now about 14 months away from the release of Peter Jackson& Steven Spielberg'sThe Adventures of Tintin. Although we're still a long ways away, I've been surprised that we haven't seen a photo from the animated movie, especially becausethey finished shootingback in March oflastyear. That said, Tintin isn't a popular character here in the US, but is throughout the rest of the world, so it only makes sense that Sony and Paramount (co-distributing) choseEmpireto debut theveryfirst lookat the CGI character. However, we're not fully there yet, as they just kicked off a nifty little visual countdown for the reveal on theirwebsite.

Seen above are four small portions of bigger images as revealed on their site:empireonline.com/reveal/. The four little teaser images are just tidbits from what looks like a bigger photo of the CGI Tintin, voiced and modeled byJamie Bell. As far as we can tell, from left to right: Tintin's yellow overcoat, Snowy's hair (his dog), his brown pants, and his blue sweater that he normally wears (usingthis photofor reference). Empire is playing coy and not mentioning anything anywhere, so we don't know how or when the rest of the photos will be revealed, but we're pretty damn certain this iswillbe the first photo fromThe Adventures of Tintin.

As a recap,The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicornis directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, with a script co-written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish. The cast includes Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, Simon Pegg& Nick Frost as Thompson& Thompson, Daniel Craig as the villain Red Rackham, and Toby Jones as Silk. The animated movie, in the works at Weta Digital, will hit US theaters onDecember 23rd, 2011. We'll let you know when the final photo is revealed!

New Writers for Twisted's Restart of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'« FirstShowing.net

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Didn't know there was anotherTexas Chainsaw Massacrein the works? There is! Over a year ago,Sawproduction company Twisted Picturestook over the rightsto the classic horror franchise started in 1974 by director Tobe Hooper, and has a"contemporary"version ofThe Texas Chainsaw Massacrein development. Well,Bloody-DisgustingandShockTillYouDropare both reporting that Twisted has just hired a new set of writers,Adam MarcusandDebra Sullivan(both ofConspiracy), to take a stab at the script. Originally, they hadThe Grudgewriter Stephen Susco on this, but now they've got new blood in to rework the script.

I guess good news, if there is any, is thatAdam Marcuspreviously directedJason Goes to Hellway back in 1993, so he has plenty of experience in the genre. Besides that, these writers' names don't mean much, but there's not too much we know about the project anyway. Apparently they're sticking with the"35 years later"approach toLeatherface 3D."We're told that the plot picks up immediately where Tobe Hooper's original left off before flashing forward 35 years. There's buzz of a 'cult' involved,"they say. So it's a new sequel, in a sense, hopefully distancing itself from Platinum Dunes' two movies a few years ago."Why is he going back? I don't want to set it in a dusty town. How do we make it more urban but keep that feel,"a producer inquires.

Given it's currently Halloween weekend, this is the perfect time to discuss the idea, but I'll leave it up to you guys, as I'm notthatfamiliar with theTexas Chainsaw Massacrefranchise. Is there any hope for this sequel in the hands of anewproduction company or is it doomed to never live up to the original film?Thoughts?

Fox Sets 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' to Hit June 2012« FirstShowing.net

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

I'm not sure why, but all the news coming from the movie studios today involves announcing major release dates. Universal secured a big batch of2012+ datesfor their projects, includingThe Bourne Legacy,Snow White and the Huntsman,47 Ronin,OuijaandThe Dark Tower, but that's not the only news. 20th Century Fox set aJune 22nd, 2012release for the upcoming Timur Bekmambetov directed adaptationAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Yes this is that awesomerevised classicwritten by Seth Grahame-Smith (also ofPride& Prejudice& Zombies) that the guy ofWantedandNight Watchis directing. Sounds great to me!

TheAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunterstory kicks off with the revelation that Lincoln's mother was killed by a supernatural creature, which fueled his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers. The book depicts the 16th US president as an axe-throwing highly trained vampire killer. Awesome. Casting has only just begun, so all rumors are just that. Thought, itwouldbe perfect it he could get Liam Neeson to play Lincoln, considering he's no longer inSpielberg's biopic. Adding this to the 2012 line-up will only help make that summer look even more enticing. There is still a long way to go, but I'm already looking forward to this!

Dante, Plaza, Natali, Gens, Kitamura Making 'Paris, I'll Kill You'« FirstShowing.net

Dante, Plaza, Natali, Gens& Kitamura

This sounds too good to be true.THRreports that a new anthology horror project is coming together calledParis, I'll Kill You, spoofing the anthology flickParis, Je T'aime. The best part about it is the line-up of filmmakers they've gathered: genre mastersJoe Dante(Germlins),Paco Plaza({REC})Vincenzo Natali(Splice),Xavier Gens(Hitman)&Ryuhei Kitamura(Midnight Meat Train). Additionally, Christopher Smith (Creep), French duo Julien Maury& Alexandre Bustillo (Inside), German music video director Joern Heitmann will direct segments of the film, described as a look at theseedy underbellyof the city of love.

Instinctive Film and Reverence are producingParis, I'll Kill Youwith Darryn Welch and Mathieu Robinet. The film is being produced independently and sold at various upcoming film markets, so we expect to see this hit a festival before it arrives in theaters. The producers are pitchingParis, I'll Kill Youas the first of a possible"horror city"franchise, just like theParis, Je T'aimeproducers, who followed up that withNew York, I Love Youand are working on Shanghai and Jerusalem, too. I'm just excited to see this get made with that incredibly impressive line-up of directors, it could turn out incredible. What a perfect Halloween treat!

From the press release:"Spanning the gamut of the genre including fantasy, suspense and pure, terrifying horror,Paris IKUis a twisted look at theCity of Love. Through its diverse stories, woven together by one connecting story, it will take its audience deep into the seedy underbelly of a Paris a long, long way from the pretty honeymoon cliche."Darryn Welch& Mathieu Robinet add:"The stars of this show are the directors. Since we started with the project we've had tremendous response from directors willing to collaborate, it's something fresh and something they can really sink their teeth into; it's also a truefanboyproject."Good!

Tom Cruise Offered a Supporting Role in Musical 'Rock of Ages'« FirstShowing.net

Tom Cruise as Les Grossman

After bringing a lot of laughs toTropic Thunderas fictional super-producer Les Grossman (who might stillget his own filmsometime down the road), it looks likeTom Cruisecould go from yelling at the top of his lungs, to singing his heart out. At least that might happen asDeadlinereports an offer is out to Cruise for a supporting role inAdam Shankman's film adaptationof the Broadway musicalRock of Ages. Apparently his role would be that of a bartender who gets to rock out to a slew of classic 80's songs from all the best hair bands of the time. Though he has to say yes first, there may be even more uncertainty in his casting.Read on!

Does anyone know whether Tom Cruise can really sing well enough to take a role in a musical? Sure hethrew his voice aroundat the bar inTop Gun, and sang a Beach Boys inspired lullaby to Dakota Fanning inWar of the Worldsbut has he ever done anything more than that? Likely the driving force behind the role is his work fromCocktail, and while the prospect of Cruise taking on a role like that for nostalgia's sake is a fun idea, the guy has to be able to sing. For now this is all up in the air since he's only been offered the role, but the prospect sounds like a hell of a lot of fun, especially if he gets to belt out a rendition ofLiving on a Prayerby Bon Jovi. What do you think?

Zach Galifianakis Might Get a Cameo in Disney's 'The Muppets'« FirstShowing.net

Zach Galifianakis / Muppets

Is it just me or does it feel likeZach Galifianakisis in pretty mucheverything. Yes, he's funny, but we're starting to get to an overload point, I think. How about yet another movie he'll be in?Entertainment Weeklysays that Galifianakis is likely to join the cast ofThe Muppets, the upcoming Jason Segel-written, James Bobin-directed revival of the beloved Jim Henson puppets. His manager toldEWthat they're"talking about it"which means it's not confirmed, but I'm sure it'll happen, as he's the perfect guy to show up in this. The Playlistfound another report adding that he will be shooting for a few days, presumably for only a cameo.

The cast of Jason Segel'sThe Muppetsmovie already includes a few great actors: Segel in the lead, Amy Adams as his girlfriend, Rashida Jones (The Social Network) and Chris Cooper. The film has a Hollywood focus as it follows the Muppets as they try to save their studio from a greedy oil baron (Cooper) who wants to dig for oil. Segel will play the lead who reunites the Muppets for one last show to save the studio. Sounds like it will be a fun movie and I hope they get a solid line-up of actors for cameos beyond just Galifianakis, especially since his appearance is now expected. Glad to see this coming together, we'll keep you updated!

Antonio Banderas Will Next Direct Psychological Thriller 'Solo'« FirstShowing.net

Antonio Banderas

Throughout the year we've heard about quite a few different projects forAntonio Banderas. In addition to starring in this year'sYou Will Meet a Tall Dark Strangerfrom Woody Allen, the actor also has Steven Soderbergh'sHaywire(formerly known asKnockout), Jean Jacques- Annaud'sBlack Gold, Pedro Almodovar'sThe Skin I Live Inand abiopic of Boabdil, the last Muslim ruler of Granada, Spain. NowVarietyreports Banderas will next direct and star inSolo, a psychological thriller with a touch of sci-fi. The story focuses on a Spanish colonel suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, but it's not clear what sci-fi elements come into play.

The original screenplay comes from writerErik Jendresenwho previously wroteThe Big Bangfor Banderas as well asGoleor: The Scales and the Sword, an animated film for the actor's Spanish animation studio Kandor Moon. I wouldn't expect the sci-fi portions of the story to get too crazy with only a budget of $14 million, but less money has been spent on extravagant effects in this day and age. Spanish actors will be used to fill out the cast with an eye towards shooting next year and theatrical release in 2012. It's hard to be interested with so few details on the story, but we'll let you know if anymore details come along.Anyone interested?

Jack Black Knows Precisely 'How to Survive a Robot Uprising'« FirstShowing.net

Robot Uprising / Jack Black

With Steven Spielberg finally committing todirect the adaptationof Daniel H. Wilson'sforthcoming novelRobopocalypse, there's quite an update on the development of an adaptation of yetanother robot-centric novelfrom the same engineer-turned-author. Though previouslyMike Myers was attachedto the big screen version ofHow to Survive a Robot Uprisingfrom writers Thomas Lennon& Ben Garant, it looks like that iteration never quite got off the ground. Nowio9reports that the rights have been acquired byJack Black, andHot Tub Time MachinedirectorSteve Pinkwill be taking a crack at the apocalyptic comedy.

Written in the form of a how-to guidebook to help endangered humans live through and after the robotic takeover of Earth, the book takes a dry and satirical approach to the scenario recounted in sci-fi novels films a thousand times over. Apparently it's not clear if Black will star in the film or if Pink will even direct it, but they're simply developing the comedy from scratch. Hopefully, both end up much more involved in the project since it seems like a perfect fit for each of them. Likely, the best route for the film would be an action comedy in the same vein asZombielandcomplete with instructional voiceover. I've been waiting for this adaptation for awhile now, so here's hoping it finally gets off the ground.Interested?

'Glee' Actress Lea Michele Looking to Party on 'New Year's Eve'« FirstShowing.net

Lea Michele

Though she's currently at the center of asmall controversyregarding arisqueGQphotoshootfeaturing a few stars from Fox's series"Glee,"the stunningLea Michelejust keeps moving, and it looks she's about to make the leap to the big screen.Varietyreports the 24 year-old actress is lining up a role inNew Year's Eve, thepseudo-sequelto this year's ensemble romantic comedyValentine's Day. DirectorGarry Marshall(Pretty Woman) is expected to return for the film along with writerKatherine Fugate. There's no word on what role she might play yet, though it'd be nice if she could finally move out of a high school role so she can act her age.

So far Michele is the only acting talent mentioned as joining the cast of this new romantic comedy that will obviously follow several different characters on New Year's Eve. However, sinceValentine's Daygarnered a whole plethora of talent including Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway and Patrick Dempsey, I can't imagine this new project will be without a slew of big name actors. Production will likely be starting sometime soon since New Line has set release forDecember 9th, 2011, so stay tuned as more information on the likely star-studded cast becomes available.

Steven Spielberg Fully Confirmed to Helm 'Robopocalypse' Next« FirstShowing.net

Robopocalypse

After hearingmultiple rumorsearlier this year about the possibility,Deadlinehas confirmed thatSteven Spielberg"has committed to next direct"Robopocalypse. This adaptation of Daniel Wilson's epic novel, written by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods,"Lost"), is about the human race's attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising. Spielberg is currently finishingWar Horse, but the plan is to start shooting in January of 2012 for release sometime in2013. DreamWorks will be developing and Disney will be releasing. Apparently Spielberg is into this so much, he's already been designing and storyboarding for it.

"Robopocalypseembodies animaginative storyof a robot rebellion unleashed against the human race,"said DreamWorks' Mark Sourian. Love their word choice -unleashed!"This is a project we immediately sparked to and with Steven directing it we knew it was in the best possible hands to bring it to worldwide audiences."Glad to see Spielberg getting back to sci-fi! And this is the perfect comeback for all those that weren't happy that he was directing a period drama about a horse. TheRobopocalypsebook won't even be published until next summer, so we've got a long way to go with this, but I've got the feeling this has some huge potential. An"apocalyptic robot uprising"movie in the hands of Steven Spielberg? There is no better filmmaker to take this on! We'll definitely keep you updated.Excited to see Spielberg directing this?

Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender or Tom Hardy for 'Total Recall'« FirstShowing.net

Farrell / Fassbender / Hardy

Back at the end of July we heard that director Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard,Underworld) woulddirect the remakeofTotal Recall, the adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short storyWe Can Remember It for You Wholesale. NowHeat Visionhas news on who might step into the shoes for the lead role once filled by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Paul Verhoeven's 1990 adaptation. Apparently a shortlist of contenders has been crafted by Columbia Pictures withColin Farrellat the top of the list. In addition,Tom Hardy(Inception) andMichael Fassbender(Inglourious Basterds) are also listed as potential candidates to head to Mars.

The reason that Farrell may be at the top of the list is because of his availability along with his talent. Though we heard the actorhad fallen outof Sheldon Turner's dramaBy Virtue Fall, it appears the actor is still involved in the project. Since that production is slated to finish in January, he would be free to doTotal Recallright away. Hardy, on the other hand, is quite busy over the next year with hisrecently reported lead rolein the next Batman sequel, not to mention finally starting production on thedelayedMad Max: Fury Roadin about a year.  Meanwhile, apparently there's rumors swirling that Fassbender might snag a role in the two-part adaptation ofThe Hobbit, and that would take him off the market for awhile.

Though Hardy is certainly my top choice to snag the role, it's unlikely to happen, so we may need to prepare ourselves for Farrell stepping onto Mars. Honestly, it'd be nice to finally see Farrell get a blockbuster that actually takes off consideringDaredevil,Miami ViceandS.W.A.T.all were pretty terrible. Farrell certainly seems to be making quite a return to studio films with roles in theFright Nightremake and the comedyHorrible Bosses, so a flick likeTotal Recalljust seems like the logical step for him.Who would you like to see leadTotal Recall?

Universal Adapting Cate Tiernan's Witch Fantasy Series 'Sweep'« FirstShowing.net

Sweep Covers

Yet another contender to fill the void that will be left upon the conclusion ofThe Twilight Sagahas entered the ring.Varietyreports Universal has picked up rights to Cate Tiernan'syoung adult fantasy seriesSweep.Robert Nelson Jacobswill script the adaptation of the story (which spans 15 books) following a 16-year-old girl who discovers she's a blood witch, descended from an ancient and powerful line. Ultimately, she must decide whether to use her powers for good or evil. While every young adult series will undoubtedly be linked back toTwilight, the first book starts in an eerily familiar way for those who know the teen vampire novels.

In the first installment,Book of Shadows, the 16 year-old Morgan finds herself a person of interest to a new senior student named Cal. Of course the love interest reveals that he and his mother are Wiccans (witches), and Morgan, who seems unusually sensitive to natural energies and adept at"magick,"becomes the focus of his attention. Definitely sounds familiar. In a weird twist, Vince Vaughn is producing the adaptation through his Wild West Picture Show Productions banner in conjunction with Alloy Entertainment (the company behindSex Drive). Combine this development with Vaughn'soption ofWicked Lovely, and it seems like the company has a weak spot for female driven fantasy fare.AnySweepfans out there excited?

Mark Wahlberg Offered the Lead Role in Remake of 'The Crow'« FirstShowing.net

The Crow / Mark Wahlberg

Straight out of left field comes a wholly interesting development regarding the remake, or rather all-new adaptation, ofJames O'Barr's comic bookThe Crow. Last time we updated you on the forthcoming reboot of the comic book adaptation, producerEdward Pressman saidan offer was out to a major actor and things were moving ahead"very aggressively"with an eye towards shooting this year. With the end of the year on the horizon, it's unlikely the film will take off before 2011, butBloody Disgustingis reporting thatMark Wahlberghas been offered the lead role of Eric Draven,a man brutally murdered who comes back to life as an undead avenger.

It seems like a bit of a longshot since big name actors are offered roles like this all the time, but the prospect is certainly enticing. It would certainly be a great redemption from doing a similarly toned flick like Max Payne. Remember writer Nick Cave is behind the script for this new iteration onThe Crowwith Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) onboard to direct. Combine all these talents and we're in for quite an interesting take onThe Crow.Would you like to see Mark Wahlberg asThe Crow?

Bruce Willis Looking to Retire John McClane After 'Die Hard 6'« FirstShowing.net

Bruce Willis

Throughout this year we've reported intermittent updates on yet another action romp withBruce Willisas Det. John McClane in a sequel thatmay or may not be calledDie Hard 24/7. Though the title and details on the plot are unknown, Willis is definitely coming back for anotherDie Hardwithwriter Skip Woods(The A-Team) behind the story. Though some people thinkLive Free or Die Hardforced John McClane to jump the shark likeIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,ShowbizSpy(viaScreen Crave) reveals that he'll do another sequel after the fifthDie Hardfilm, but the sixth film in the series will likely be his last.

While promoting his newest filmRED, Willis spoke candidly about his age, the chances of him getting replaced in theDie Hardfranchise, and his plans for the future of the series:

“In the next few years they could easily find a replacement for me or call the character someone else. But for me, I want to do 'Die Hard 5,' thenone final'Die Hard' movie— 'Die Hard 6' — before finally hanging that white vest up for good. At the moment, I can run and I can fight on screen. But there will come a time when I no longer want to do that. That’s when I’ll step away from the 'Die Hard' films.

Though Willis saysDie Hard 6will likely be his stopping point, it sounds more like he's simply self-aware of his age soon stopping him from intense action. Of course, Harrison Ford is even older than Willis and he's still cracking whips and fighting Russians, so who knows when Willis will stop fighting bad guys. Surely the studio will be interested in keeping the franchise alive as long as they can. Fortunately, it doesn't look like Willis will retire anytime soon as the actor says,"I never thought of acting as work, and I don’t look at what I do as work so I won’t retire.” For now, we're waiting to hear when we'll next see John McClane on screen again, so stay tuned.

J.J. Abrams Producing Maya Forbes' Project 'Infinitely Polar Bear'« FirstShowing.net

J.J. Abrams

Recalling the happenings on ABC's"Lost"from creatorJ.J. Abrams, it's not entirely surprising that a film titledInfinitely Polar Bearhas fallen in his lap. However, it's a bit surprising that the story of this new producing gig for Abrams doesn't have some mystery behind it. Instead,Pajibareports the film is a drama about a bipolar man who attempts to hold onto his stability in order to take care of his two daughters while their mother does her best to start a career. The title seems a little silly knowing the plot, but I'm quite impressed with Abrams ventures into movies we wouldn't expect from him like the forthcomingMorning Glorywith Rachel McAdams.

WriterMaya Forbes(Monsters vs. Aliens,The Rocker) will make her directorial debut with this film, and she also wrote the script herself. ApparentlyMark Ruffalois one of the lead candidates to play the lead role of the bipolar man who is hospitalized and has to attempt to make amends with his two children and the wife that left him. With all these films Abrams is producing through his Bad Robot banner, and his current direction ofSuper 8, the filmmaker continues to be one of the hardest working talents in the industry. I'm certainly interested to see what other directions Bad Robot will take with their feature films in the future. How about you?

The Hobbit is Greenlit, Peter Jackson Starts Shooting in February« FirstShowing.net

Peter Jackson

I feel like a broken record saying all this, but we can finally report, from multiple sources, thatThe Hobbitis greenlit, ready to go, with Peter Jackson at the helm, and shooting starting early next year. TheNY Timeswas the first to report that Jackson's deal to direct is finalized and Warner Bros' and MGM have"worked out their deal to finance the pair of films."The Wraphas also announced thatThe Hobbithas been greenlit with shooting starting inFebruary. No more sources needed, this is a done deal, it's time to start gettingreallyexcited about seeing J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel finally hit the big screen in two movies in 2012 and 2013.

TheNY Timessays there are still issues regarding the actors unions in New Zealand (see here for more info) and drops this nerve-wracking statement near the end:"If the studios move the film out of New Zealand, the budget, which already runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars, would have to be redrawn, and at least some further delay would be inevitable."We're so close, I hope everything works out, and I'm sure it will. I really don't think New Zealand wants to lose this production, nor does Jackson want to move off the island. Rumors are thatMartin Freemanmight play Bilbo Baggins, but no casting has been officially confirmed yet, though we can assume that Sir Ian McKellen will undoubtedly be back to play the lovable wizard Gandalf.

Don't forget that the budget for both movies is around $500 million, which is quite a damn bit, but bring it on, as I want to seeThe Hobbitimagined in all of its epic glory, following in the same footsteps as theLord of the Ringstrilogy. It is a bit sad that Guillermo del Toro (or anyone else for that matter) won't be putting his unique stamp on this, although I have a feeling Jackson will still pull from a lot of the designs and work that del Toro did before he left. Warner Bros, who runs New Line Cinema, will be releasing the firstHobbitonDecember 19th, 2012. It may seem like a very long way away, but it'll be here sooner than you know!

Jet Li Cast in Kung Fu Epic Titled 'Flying Swords of Dragon Gate'« FirstShowing.net

Jet Li

Oh boy, here we go again. Even though he once said, years ago while makingFearless, that he'd never star in a martial arts epic again, theAssociated Press(viaMarketSaw) reports thatJet Lihas been cast in exactly that - a"new 3-D kung fu epic"titleFlying Swords of Dragon Gate. It's being directed by veteran Kong Kong filmmakerTsui Hark(The Blade, Once Upon a Time in China III& V +TV Series, Seven Swords, All About Women) and will also star China's Zhou Xun and Chen Kun, Taiwan's Kwai Lun-mei and Mavis Fan. It has a modest budget of around$35 millionand is being planned for release in December 2011.Read on!

Flying Swords of Dragon Gate'sstory is apparently inspired by Tsui's 1992 martial arts filmDragon Inn, which revolves around a face-off between the imperial agents and a warrior couple at a desert inn. Shooting has already begun in China. So they'veworked togetherbefore, and maybe Tsui convinced him to shoot this? Or maybe he's returning because he loves doing it, who cares, Jet Li is awesome, and it'll be great to see him starring in another new martial arts epic. Although if you sawThe Expendables, heisgetting just a little bit old nowadays. Anyway, even if you don't like Jet Li returning again, apparently this freight train has already started running, and there's no stopping it. Sultry Story Details Arrive for RDJ's 'Oz the Great and Powerful'« FirstShowing.net

Wizard of Oz / Robert Downey Jr.

It wasofficially confirmed last weekthat Sam Raimi's next directing gig will indeed byOz the Great and Powerful, a sort of faux-prequel toThe Wizard of Ozabout how the wizard arrived in Oz and became the deceptively powerful ruler. I'm excited to see this, just because I love Raimi's style and I know he'll do great things with a fun story like this. And speaking of the story,Pajibahas uncovered details about the plot ofOz the Great and Powerfuland it involves a lot of sexual tension, but that makes this quite enticing, especially knowing thatRobert Downey Jr.is still supposedly attached to star in the film as the Wizard.Read on!

Here's the description from Pajiba, but as always, if you want to stay fresh on this going on, don't read on:

Thanks to the Hollywood Cog, we now know quite a few details about Mitchell Kapner's story, which would have the Wizard— a snake-oil salesman posing as a magician — enter Oz via a hot-air balloon, which he uses to escape an angry husband who has found out that Oz slept with his wife. There,Oz— a fast-talking huckster who wears a velveteen frock coat (yes, I can see that) — falls in love withGlinda(the Good Witch), and the two combine forces to Fight the Evil WitchesEvanoraandTheodora. Theodora starts out as a good witch, but after Oz jilts her sexual advances, Evanora— the truly evil witch — convinces Theodora to become an evil witch with her and help her to rule all of Oz. Both Evanora and Theodora are described as incredibly attractive, seductive women, and Theodora likes to wear black, thigh-high boots.

I actually really like the sound of this, it's edgy, kind of exciting (in more ways than one), and it'll give some beautiful actresses (at least three of them?) the chance to shine in a Sam Raimi genre picture. With Downey Jr's crazy schedule over the next few years, includingSherlock Holmes 2, Alfonso Cuarón'sGravityandThe Avengers, we're not sure how soon this will shoot or if he'll even stay on-board, but I hope he does. Other than that, no cast members have been announced yet, but I'm sure Raimi is in pre-production and will start work on casting soon enough. With WB's release ofThe Wizard of Ozon Blu-Ray, I've wondering when we'd actually get a film that delves into that world again, but this may be it. We'll keep you updated!Thoughts?

Eddie Murphy Joins Ben Stiller for Brett Ratner's 'Tower Heist'« FirstShowing.net

Eddie Murphy

Just last week we found out that Alan Aldawould be playinga Bernie Madoff type villain in Brett Ratner's long gestating action comedyTower Heistfrom Universal Pictures. NowDeadlineis reportingEddie Murphyis also joining the cast. Apparently he had been mentioned for the project back when it was still calledTrump Heistand was supposed to feature a predominantly African-American cast. Instead the story simply follows a variety of operations and maintenance workers attempting to rip off the Wall Street crook (Alda) who lifted their pension funds to maintain his luxurious lifestyle in a spectacular Manhattan high-rise.

The combination of workers (including Murphy and Stiller) join together and use their combined knowledge of the building to pull off their heist. Since Muprhy hasn't made a decent live-action comedy in forever, it'd be nice to see him return to form with a film like this. He's got a lot to make up for though considering his track record outside of theShrekfranchise for the past decade, but a return to his glory in films likeTrading PlacesandComing to Americawould be nice. Since the project has been changed and rewritten so many times (with the most recent revision byCatch Me If You Canwriter Jeff Nathanson) it's already on shaky ground. What do you guys think?

Rumor: Bradley Cooper is the Top Contender to Play The Flash« FirstShowing.net

Cooper / The Flash

Though it's not exactly that big of a story,Deadlinerecently reported that the scripts forGreen Lantern 2and theslowlydevelopingadaptation ofThe Flashwill be turned into Warner Bros. sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. No big deal. However, we are somewhat interested in a recent rumor that pegs a familiar name to another DC Comics property.Movieholeis sayingBradley Cooper, who was once amajor contender for Green Lanternbefore the role went to Ryan Reynolds, is the current favorite to play the Barry Allen iteration ofThe Flash. It would be quite an interesting switch considering Reynolds was once up forThe Flashas well.

Of course, since a script hasn't been turned in, we're likely a few months, if not more, away from getting an actor officially attached to the project, but it is an interesting prospect. After his success inThe Hangoverand his proximity to grabbing the role ofGreen Lantern, WB and DC Comics are still quite interested in making him a big"part of the family"with a role like this. Though nothing is certain yet, one fact may already be clear: Greg Berlanti might not directThe Flashdespiteprevious rumors. Deadline has a source who says,"He won't want to direct it because he kinda wants to do something in between size-wise first before attempting something that large."Of course, if WB likes the script (which he helped develop after writing Green Lantern) and wants him to direct, then it's not entirely out of the question.Do you like Bradley Cooper as The Flash?

Big Rumor: Danny Boyle is Returning to Direct 28 Months Later« FirstShowing.net

Danny Boyle

Whoa wait, what the heck?Dread Centralis reporting a big scoop from an apparently reliable source saying thatDanny Boylewill be returning to direct the still forthcoming28 Weeks Latersequel. We're calling it28 Months Laterbecause that's the logical next step in the28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Laterfranchise, so I don't know what else they would call it anyway, but Dread says it's"as of yet untitled."They don't offer any details, but do say Boyle is"planning to return to direct."Really? I don't know, I just don't believe this. And we found a separate update that also seems to indicate that the project is still pretty much dead in the water.

The last we wrote about the28 Months Latersequel was last year in regards toFox Atomic shutting down, without much info. Our last update before that, sometime in late '08, involved an unknown director namedPaul Andrew Williams being hiredfor the gig. But we obviously haven't heard a single word about it since. And apparently there's a big reason why.WorstPreviewsspoke with screenwriterAlex Garlandrecently and asked him about28 Months Later:"I'll answer that completely honestly. When we made28 Days Later, the rights were frozen between a group of people who are no longer talking to each other. And so, the film is never going to happen unless those people start talking to each other again. There isno scriptas far as I'm aware."That was from last week, so how is it that Boyle worked everything out in only a few weeks time?

Based on the information we have, I'm going to say that I don't believe this at all. And speaking with Boyle (watch our interview) a month or so ago, it definitely sounds like he's looking at moving on to bigger, better things followingSlumdog Millionaireand127 Hours, rather than returning to an older franchise that really doesn't have any fire behind it anyway. There's a chance this could be true, which is why we're reporting it as a rumor, but for now take this with a giant grain of salt. I'm a fan of this"zombie"franchise, I enjoyed both28 Days Laterand28 Weeks Later, but I don't reallyneedto see another sequel. What about you guys?

Tony Gilroy's 'Bourne Legacy' Sequel Won't Have Jason Bourne« FirstShowing.net

The Bourne Legacy

It wasofficially announcedearly last week that directorTony Gilroy(ofMichael Clayton, Duplicity) would be taking over theBournefranchise to bring us the fourth new sequel calledThe Bourne Legacy. But, of course, since Paul Greengrass won't be back, neither will Matt Damon, so this isnotgoing to be the sequel we're all probably expecting. Gilroy called Jeff Wells ofHollywood Elsewhereafter the news broke last week to give himactualdetails on what to expect:"This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one's replacing Matt Damon. There will be awhole new hero, a whole new chapter… this is a stand-alone project."Wow.

So no Jason Bourne, a new"hero", a fresh start, isn't that exactly what a franchiserebootis, especially if they're at least continuing with a CIA super-agent who goes on the run."The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,"Gilroy added."Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very muchalive. What happened in the first three films is thetriggerfor what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy… the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return {down the road}."Okay, nowI'm intrigued! Gilroy is one of my personal favorite directors and I had a good feeling he would eventually take overBourneand it sounds like he's got some very interesting plans for this.

"Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We're going to show you thebigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we're going and see what we're doing it'll be pretty obvious."TheBournefranchise had a fantastic finale in 2007 withThe Bourne Ultimatum, but has been on a rocky road ever since because Universal wants more, but not many others do. They've hired countless writers to take a crack at a story and honestly I don't even know who's behind the script that Gilroy is using. Whatever the case, now we know where they're headed.

Exclusive: The Chemical Brothers Scoring Joe Wright's 'Hanna'« FirstShowing.net

Joe Wright's Hanna

I'm currently attending the New York Comic-Con just finished watching the panel for Joe Wright'sHanna, the upcoming action movie starringSaoirse RonanandEric Bana. They showed a few scenes of footage, which looked just okay, but during the intro to one of the clips, the moderator mentioned that there will be Chemical Brothers music behind it. So I decided to step up to the mic and confirm myself. Joe Wright said thatThe Chemical Brotherswill be scoring the entire movie to provide a more"modern beat"instead of the classical scores of his previous films. As a longtime fan of the Chemical Brothers, this is fantastic news.

As a recap,HannastarsSaoirse Ronanas a 14-year-old Eastern European girl raised by her father (Bana) to be a cold-blooded killing machine. Cate Blanchett also stars in the film as an icy intelligence operative on a mission to find Bana, a former CIA operative, but they get to Hanna first. The clips we saw included a few actions scenes but there's not too much we know about this, since they haven't released a trailer and besides this footage, we have no clue what to expect. I'm actually quite excited to hear the Chemical Brothers score in this, as it should be awesome to hear their style of music on top of a sleek, modern hitman action movie.

It's a big trend in Hollywood right now to hire actual bands and electronic groups to score films, from Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails scoringThe Social Networkto Daft Punk scoringTron Legacyto Phoenix scoringSomewhere. Wright said that he has known Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, the guys behindThe Chemical Brothers, since the early 90's when he used to do lighting and projection at raves with the both of them. The group released their seventh album earlier this year titledFurther. Wright is"very excited"for the Chemical Brothers score, as am I. We'll let you know when we have any more to show you fromHanna, so stay tuned!

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I' Loses 3D Release« FirstShowing.net

Harry Potter

A small victory arrive for naysayers of the popular and profitable 3D format as Warner Bros. announced today, via press release, thatHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Iwillonly be released in 2Dfor both conventional and IMAX screens. The decision came as a result of being unable to deliver a quality 3D conversion by the time the film is supposed to hit the big screen on November 19th this year. Rather than upsetting the fans with a delayed release or delivering a shitty, rushed 3D conversion (looking at youClash of the Titans), Warner Bros. has made the right move in avoiding any possible tainting of the two-part franchise finale.

Director David Yates comments,"This decision, which we completely support, underscores the fact that Warner Bros. has alwaysput quality first."Producer David Heyman added,"For 10 years, we have worked alongside Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been topreserve the integrity of Jo Rowling's booksas we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment."Applause all around for a very smart decision. I know fans were extremely upset whenHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Princewas moved from its November 2008 release in favor of a July 2009 date, so WB has certainly dodged a bullet this time.

Despite a lack of 3D for the first part of the franchise conclusion, the studio did say thatHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part IIwill still hit conventional and IMAX screens on July 15, 2011 in both 2D and 3D formats. In the meantime be sure to check out theamazingtrailersfor the finale which have been released so far.You may commence with your 3D love/hate below!

Emily Blunt& Rachel Weisz Together in Semi-Improvised Film« FirstShowing.net

Blunt / Weisz

Two of the most beautiful and talented actress working today are coming together for a new film asVarietyreportsEmily Blunt(The Wolfman) andRachel Weisz(The Fountain) will star in a new film  fromHumpdaywriter/directorLynn Shelton. Much like that comedy, which garnered plenty of buzz at the Sundance Film Festival last year, the as yet untitled project will be semi-improvisational. But that's not the only shared trait amongst the two projects asHumpdaystarMark Duplassis also joining the cast as a man who comes between the two sisters being played by Weisz and Blunt. That's one lucky bastard.

In addition to her indie acclaim on the festival circuit, Shelton also recently directed a stellar episode on this season of AMC's"Mad Men."While Humpday was certainly praised throughout its run, I found myself somewhat underwhelmed by it. The performances were spectacular, but I was just expecting it to be a little funnier. The mumblecore nature of these films should be an interesting experience for Blunt and Weisz so I'm interesting to see how it turns out. Improvisation on-set whether for comedy or drama is something that's always fascinated and amazed me. Stay tuned as this project develops.

DreamWorks Reviving Adaptation of Microsoft's 'Halo' Series?« FirstShowing.net

Master Chief

After being on hold for years, Microsoft said this past April that a big screen adaptation of their huge video game franchiseHalowould happenwhen the time is right. After the most recent installment in the game series,Halo: Reach, grossed $200 million,VulturereportsDreamWorksthinks there's no better time to take another stab at bringing Master Chief into theaters. However, since the project had already been deep in development years ago at Fox and Universal there's plenty of legal red tape to sift through. But DreamWorks' solution to that issue will have the studio usingnovelizations of the gameas source material.

To make a long story short, the reason behind the books being used as source material rises from a concern that Fox and Universal may demand a return of the wasted money they spent developing the property based on the video game. From an original script by Alex Garland to producing responsibilities taken over by Peter Jackson who would mentor then unestablished filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (District 9), the adaptation ofHalohas been through the cleaners before its eventual halt but perhaps DreamWorks can make it happen. I guess thoserumors of Spielberg's involvementfrom last year may not have been so fanciful after all. But of now no screenwriter has been brought in to script the adaptation.

As for thatHalo: The Fall of Reachscriptthat writer Stuart Beattie sent to Microsoft last year, apparently the adaptation of thenovel of the same name(which he wrote during the 2007 writer's strike) was done completely on spec simply because he's such a fan of the story. The script was sent to Microsoft and Beattie would relish the opportunity to work on the series. He says,"My long-term goal is to get three Halo movies {based on the three novelizations} made. It’s not something I can accomplish tomorrow. But if I can help, I am glad to do it."Perhaps he'll get his chance if DreamWorks can make this project finally come together.

However, Microsoft may not be so easy-going when it comes to taking Halo to the big screen. Vulture's source says,"“It’s agigantic waste of time, because {Microsoft} doesn’t want anything to happen in any other media that couldscrew up a multi-billion dollar franchise. Somebody has to be in control of a movie; it’s a director’s medium. But they’re completely averse to that. Because if Steven Spielberg fucks it up, what’s your recourse? So the rule is: ‘First, do no harm.’” Sounds like an uphill battle, but all I know is the kick-ass, live-action commercials thatcomearoundwhen a new game gets released always make me dream of an amazingHaloflick. Stay tuned as this story develops.

Mark Ruffalo Teases Another Hulk and Avengers Sequels Too« FirstShowing.net

Hulk / Ruffalo

Back in '03, director Ang Lee introduced us to his version ofHulkwith Eric Bana wearing the indestructible and ever-elastic purple shorts. Then Edward Norton got mean and green for director Louis Leterrier in '08'sThe Incredible Hulk. But with the fast-approaching arrival of a new Bruce Banner inThe Avengersfrom comic book adaptation newcomerMark Ruffalo, it sounds like the new Hulk will get yet another solo feature sometime after Marvel's superhero ensemble assembles in 2012. The actor recently sat down withEmpireand briefly spoke about Marvel's plan to make another Hulk movie and sequels toThe Avengers.

We just recently heard from Ruffalo about using motion-capture technology to play the Hulk, but his new comments reveal Marvel seems to keep looking far into the future for their upcoming slate. Here's what Ruffalo had to say about Marvel's plans, and his brief take on The Hulk:

"They set up several pictures over a couple of years and possibly there will be a Hulk movie. There'll probably be acouple more 'Avengers'too, which would be fun. The way I see it, Edward Norton has bequeathed this role to me. I reckon the part ismy generation's Hamlet, and there's still some room forinterpreting who The Hulk is. Growing up I'd rush home to watch my favorite show, {'The Incredible Hulk'}. You had the main character, played by Bill Bixby, and he had this calming quality to him. I watched it again recently, and it was so different from anything on TV at the time. You could really see the characterstruggling with the human aspectof what was happening."

Ruffalo sounds like the best possible replacement after Norton's somewhat disappointing exclusion from Marvel's universe. This will be quite an undertaking for the actor and by far the largest studio film he's ever done. While I'm not so sure we need another Hulk movie, I suppose it depends on what happens with the character whenThe Avengershits theaters in 2012.What do you want to see form a new Hulk movie?

Sly Stallone 'Going for All the Marbles' with Expendables Sequel« FirstShowing.net

Expendables Cast

Back in August we heardSylvester Stallone, the director/writer/star ofThe Expendablesalreadyhad an idea readyfor asequelto the over-the-top action romp. At the time we wondered how Stallone would top cameos fromBruce Willisand Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it seems like he not only has a solution to that problem, but also wants to bring back"Stone Cold"Steve Austin from the grave. Whilst promoting his turn in the new action comedyRED, the incomparable Willis confirmed rumors that Stallone wants him to take a much bigger role in the sequel. In addition, it sounds like plenty more action stars could join in the fun.Read on!

Willis toldComingSoon,"I talked to Sly and he'sgoing for all the marblesthis time, and he's going toget everybodyin this time. Even Stone Cold Steve Austin who took two bullets in the last film, he's coming back, too. Hopefully, they'll start shooting it while we're young enough to survive."Willis doesn't elaborate on who"everybody"might be, but Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, and Danny Trejo (whogot left behindwhen the first film went into production) would be nice additions. Also, after making a cameo in the same scene with Willis, there's a chance Arnold Schwarzenegger could get a bigger role since his term as California's governor ends in 2011, and he's unable to run for another term. The Expendableswas some mindless fun this past summer, and a bigger sequel should be just as entertaining.Who do you want inThe Expendables 2?

Fox 2000 Nabs the Rights to Make a Fun Beach Boys Musical« FirstShowing.net

Beach Boys

"Wouldn't it be nice…"Not everyone loves musicals, and not everyone loves the Beach Boys, but I'm sure a few of you may at least be excited to hear about a project coming together.Deadlineis reporting that a hot project in town that just sold toFox 2000involves the rights to Beach Boys music to be developed into an"original musical"with a storyline featuring more of the"surf and fun prevalent in the band's many hits."SoBlue CrushmeetsNowhere Boy? Something like that. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, producers ofHairsprayand the upcomingFootloose, are developing whileSusannah Grant, ofErin Brockovich, is writing the script.

There aren't many details available about exactly what they're planning for this Beach Boys project, but the pitch did get quite a bit of industry interest from Universal and Fox 2000, with the latter winning with a full"7-figure bid."The musical is obviously expected to use the band's music, but won't tell their life story. TheBeach Boys, who hit it big in the 60's, were a fun-lovin' Southern California group of five musicians who were often called"America's Band."Although not as popular today, some of the surviving members still do shows, but it's their songs from the 60's like"Surfin' USA","I Get Around"and"Fun, Fun, Fun"that they're remembered for the most. Find the right director and I could actually see this turning out pretty damn good.

We'll keep you updated on this project and will let you know when we hear more details about they're plans for it. I can enjoy a good musical here or there, so as long as they put together something as fun as all of the Beach Boys' songs, this should be great.Any Beach Boys fans excited by the prospect of a musical?

Julia Roberts& Meryl Streep Team for 'August: Osage County'« FirstShowing.net

Meryl Streep / Julia Roberts

Two of the most popular and successful actresses are teaming up for what promises to draw a huge female audience into theaters.Deadlinereports Academy Award nominated actressesJulia RobertsandMeryl Streepare coming together to star in an adaptation of Tracy Letts'August: Osage County, thePulitzer Prize winning bookandTony award-winning play.Letts also wrote the screenplay forJohn Wells(The Company Men) to direct. The story takes off when the father of the Weston clan disappears one hot summer night, and the family reunites at the Oklahoma homestead, where long-held secrets are unflinchingly and uproariously revealed.

Streep will play Violet, the drug-addicted matriarch of the working class Weston clan while Roberts will play Barbara Fordham, the oldest daughter in the family. Violet's problems and her penchant for revealing family secrets is a big issue, but Barbara is melting because her husband is cheating on her with a college student. They are brought together when Violet's husband goes missing and all three of their daughters come home to rally around mom. In the process, a lot of family secrets get revealed. Apparently the project has been in development for several years at The Weinstein Company, and it finally seems to be coming together thanks to their knew relationship with John Wells after picking upThe Company Men. Sounds like Oscar bait to me.Anyone interested?
